Born with a living ribbon of serpent-like scales and drawn across the border between human and yōkai worlds, Etsuko must discover whether difference is a curse, a calling—or something the world has no name for yet.

Where does Etsuko belong?
To human eyes, the serpentine birthmark winding from her cheek across her shoulder makes Etsuko an object of fascination, fear and exploitation. Across the threshold, it may be the first honest thing anyone has seen about her.
The story moves through modern Ōsaka, occult games, living folklore, music, dangerous ambition and the strange territories reached through gates that are not always there when one looks back.

Thudlūk’s BODI DENKI studio does not wait for customers to find it. The shop roams the city on two enormous living legs, carrying experimental electric inks, suspicious technology and a proprietor whose ideas about tattoos are considerably more mobile than anyone requested.

Part divination game, part spirit invitation, Kokkuri-san asks players to place their fingers on a ten-yen coin and call something through. In Etsuko’s story, one forbidden question helps shape the archvillain she will eventually face.
One question should never be asked: “Who are you?” Naturally, someone asks.

Etsuko takes a formerly anarchic yōkai group and teaches it to move as one band: a heavy, bottom-driven electric maelstrom, a deep blues shuffle and chromatic keyboard lines that refuse to behave.
At Momotarō Farm, the new sound becomes more than music. Etsuko’s living mark shifts with the performance, the band discovers structure without becoming respectable, and both worlds are invited to listen.
